Meridian, Mississippi: Weidmann’s Restaurant, MSU Riley Center, Steep Canyon Rangers, Cracker Barrel

My dad, husband and I went to Meridian, Mississippi, last weekend to attend a concert of one of my favorite bands – the Steep Canyon Rangers. They are an awesome bluegrass band from North Carolina and they sometimes tour with Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. At this concert, the Meridian Symphony Orchestra played with them. It was lovely and a really neat concert. Very unique. I was lucky enough to see their show with Steve Martin and Edie Brickell a few years ago – I think it’s the best show I’ve ever been to. Fiddle music and comedy…it was fantastic.

We began the evening at Weidmann’s Restaurant. If you are in Meridian, I very highly recommend going there. It is a superb restaurant and has been in operation since 1870! It’s been in its current location since 1923. I don’t have pictures of the inside, but I snapped a couple of the sign outside. There is a dining room downstairs and also a bar area and balcony upstairs.

The service was great and the food was delicious. We sat on the balcony…it is such a popular place that the downstairs dining room was full and we didn’t have reservations…but it was a gorgeous evening, so the balcony was perfect!

Bruschetta – some with shaved parmesan, some with mozzerella.

I have never seen oysters this large. Is it just me?

View from the balcony at dinner:

The concert was in the MSU Riley Center Theater (MSU is Mississippi State University…the main campus is in Starkville and there is a branch in Meridian). It is a beautiful building.

MSU Riley Center

It was built in the late 1800’s and at that time was known as “the Grand Opera House.” It closed in the 1920’s but was eventually re-opened and everything was restored to match what it looked like originally, even down to the wallpaper.

The Meridian Symphony Orchestra played a nice patriotic medley and then Steep Canyon Rangers came out to continue the show. It was awesome.

The next morning we ate at Cracker Barrel. I LOVE Cracker Barrel. Not only do they have great food and service, but they have a store with all kinds of things – from scarves and tops, to cookware, cd’s, candy, etc.

Every Cracker Barrel has rocking chairs outside.

I really like the decor inside, too.

And now for the store:

I could see myself buying most of the items in the store 🙂 I did buy one thing – a cast iron skillet. I don’t have one! And I need one.

So, that was our weekend! And if you want to hear some good music, check out Steep Canyon Rangers!
