I’m getting ready to do TWO gardens (geez, wish me luck!). One is a vegetable garden and the other is a flower garden. After ordering and reviewing several different catalogs, I ordered seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Their catalog is really neat and informative. I loved just thumbing through it and learning about all the different varieties of seeds they offer. Most of the seeds in the catalog had descriptions and neat tidbits of information. As an example, I bought a packet of flower seeds called Love-In-A-Mist – the description states that Love-In-A-Mist dates back to English gardens of the 1570’s. Makes you want to have a cottage with a big flower garden, right? The Canterbury Bells seeds I got had a description that they are “…a cottage staple for centuries. It was offered by Comstock, Ferre, & Co. in 1856.” Neat, huh? Not to leave others out – I ordered some Cucumber – Boston Pickling that is “an old heirloom dating back to 1880…excellent for pickles…very popular variety at the turn of the 20th century.” I’m also going to try Ground Cherries (Strawberry Husk Tomato), “Huge yield of tart-sweet berries. This is the common type, used by the Pilgrims; excellent for pies, jams, and preserves of all kinds, also delecious fresh.” You get the idea. I would recommend getting the catalog just to read it and imagine all the possibilities! Hopefully, both gardens will turn out as planned. I think I was a bit too ambitious with the veggie garden, but you live and learn. I tried to do a garden last year and learned a lot from it, so still learning this year. I hope I have something good to show everyone later on!

Turning the soil over so I can put compost and top soil over it.

In front on left are onions (Gold Princess variety), in the back of those are tomatoes (Sioux variety) and over to the right is waaay too much broccoli (Waltham 29). I need to thin the broccoli plants!

I have to admit…I planted some Rocky Top Lettuce seeds and they sprouted, but when I moved them to the window, I lost them. I think I under-watered, so going to try again. Wish me luck!
